The month of Muharram, in itself, is a divine blessing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has brought down, for the benefit of mankind. The month, which marks the first phase of the Hijrah year, is known to be among the four sacred months – Rajab, Dhul-Qadah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram – and the specialness bestowed upon this holy period by Almighty Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), plus the fact that it is highly revered, as in the disposition of Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) towards it, makes it one that commands respect, in every respect, from every believer. An act of goodness here, is highly rewarded and a sinful disposition towards it, equally meets with the wrath of the Lord of the worlds.

Our Creator does things in ways that please Him and the month of Muharram is no exception of the months He, with His pleasure, has decided to let descend down His outright mercies and favours from. The virtues embedded in this auspicious time, are of great enormity with values that stretch positivities into the life of the one that observes rewarding acts in it.

Along with the divine good-fortune bearing actions in Muharram comes amazing events, centred around breakthrough/victory/triumph of Allah’s apostles in the past. With few to mention, among the blessed stories tied to it, are the events of it being the month Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) saved the children of Israel, the month Prophet Noah’s Ark came to rest on Mount Judi. Ashura – tenth day of Muharram – is a day in which a fast observed in it, is highly rewarding, for it comes in a month referred to as “sacred” as explained among the teachings of our grand teacher, Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ).

The greatness of Ashura can be understood in the sight of knowing that the earlier referred events took place in it, alongside some other magnanimous events that indicate Allah’s bounty, and it is a day Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) would fast on, even before prophethood was gifted to him. The good things of the world with no hereafter value could be skipped but divinely bountiful duties should be tended to, as opportunities that should not be forgone.

Fasting is recommended in the first ten days of Muharram but the absence of the ability to fulfill that, could limit one, to fast few days in it or just the day of Tasu’a (Ninth day) and Ashura, as power permits. Fasting on Ashura is a deed highly pleasing to Almighty Allah, as confirmed by Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ), so losing out on it, would not be a favourable act.

Muharram, which commences Hijrah, is a chance to obtain utmost goodness from our Creator and more interesting is that it naturally comes as a blessing on its own, hence its fitting into what could be described as “good kick-off on a pedestal of blessings”. Hijrah, as a whole, has come to shine on us, the light to a better path and the sooner we utilize it, the better.

May Allah put in us, the zeal to walk in the path of His mercy and make it count in our worldly endeavours and come as significant in our scale of goodness in the hereafter, Aameen.

Let’s not forget to recite Suratul Kahf before sunset. May Allah accept our sincere worship.
