Muslims all across the world rely on the Quran and the Sunnah for guidance in all facets of life, including health and medical issues. Islamic medicine was developed during the Islamic Golden Age, which spanned the ninth to the thirteenth centuries. In medical history, it is frequently referred to as Arabic medicine. Even while Greek medicine predominated, it was also somewhat influenced by Islamic or Prophetic medicine and folk medicine. The knowledge of many crops, including grains, seeds, and fodder, as well as their germination and growth processes, is provided in multiple Surah of the Holy Quran. The Quran mentions a variety of plant names, including date palms, figs, olives, ginger, grapes, miswak, onion, barley, garlic, pomegranates, and camphor, among others. Plants are regarded as a gift from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ .

There are two types of knowledge: knowledge of religion and knowledge of the body, according to a quote attributed to the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. Prophetic medicine is the total authentic Hadith narrated by the Prophet, peace be upon him, in relation to medicine, whether Qur’anic verses or honourable Prophetic Hadith. It includes remedy recipes, by which the Prophet, peace be upon him, was cured or he called people to be cured by.
Furthermore, it includes recommendations relevant to human health in the conditions of life, including eating, drinking, housing, and marriage. It comprehends legislations related to medication, medicine in practicing the profession, and the guarantee of the patient in the perspective of Islamic Law. Ibn Al Qayyim, may Allah be merciful with him, in his book Zad Al Ma’ad Fe Haday Khair Al Abad, said: “The medicine of the Messenger صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, is not similar to the medicine of physicians. The medicine of the Prophet, peace be upon him, is certain, categorical, and godly medicine; issued by the Revelation, Prophethood niche, and sagacity; while the medicine of others is inductive, assumptive, and experimental.”
According to medical knowledge, a fly has some pathogens on certain body parts (this was mentioned by the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, years ago, when there was practically no formal medical knowledge). But according to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ, there is no disease for which He did not also create a cure, with the exception of death (meaning the decline of old age). But Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ has said that He created no disease without also creating its remedy, except death (meaning the decline of old age).
It is imperative that the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria begin to be interested in receiving medical care through prophetic means. Every muslim should be aware of where he or she will receive their medical care, according to experts, who contend that the majority of Nigerian practitioners have a limited understanding of Sunnah treatments.
The Director of the Islamic Heritage Herbal Clinic in Ibadan, Mallam Tabib Ismaeel Jamiu Olohuntoyin, talks about his experience seeking knowledge of Islamic treatment in this interview with the Muslim Voice NG. He also discusses the challenges he faced along the way, advice for aspiring Islamic healers, and his expectations for the future.
MV: Tell us about yourself.
Mallam Tabib: My name is Tabib Ismaeel Jamiu Olohuntoyin. I’m the Director of Islamic Heritage Herbal Clinic, which is located at No. 40, Ogbere Idi-Ahun, Mosfala Muslim Area, Ibadan, Oyo State.
I’m a doctor who treats in tandem with Islamic and natural prescriptions – a treatment devoid of polytheistic practices.
MV: How did your journey to Islamic healing start?
Mallam Tabib: My journey to Islamic treatment was one borne out of passion. I learnt this profession from Islamic scholars who also heal in the Islamic way. Scholars like: Shaykh AbdulRahman Owolabi, Shaykh Muslihudeen A’lamal Yaqeen, Dr Bunyameen Ballo. Also, I learnt about this profession via reading Islamic books that teach prophetic medicine like “Tibu Nabawi”. I also learnt from the foremost doctors who combined both natural and Islamic treatments.
When I graduated from Mahd A’robiyy (Islamic Institute Elekuro, Ibadan), my teacher, Dr Bunyameen Ballo advised me to venture into this profession so we could stop people from seeking medications via the Haram means. This fueled my passion further, and AlhamduliLlah, it has been a good alternative for these kinds of people.
MV: How has society been able to accept what you do?
Mallam Tabib: In 2005, we founded Islamic Heritage Herbal Clinic as a full-fledged hospital. Ever since, we have set laudable paces because it has really solved people’s problems. Many saw it as a unique means of treatment where they did not need to commit Shirk or be told to bring fetish stuff. In fact, the turnout was so massive that it took us by surprise. Today, we have patients across Nigeria and even outside of the country. AlhamduliLlah.
MV: What are some of your methods of treatment?
Mallam Tabib: Our methods of treatment are many. Some of them are: Natural Medications, Prophetic Medications such as Black Seed, Zam Zam, Olive Oil, Hijamah (Cupping), Ruqyah (Exorcism), and so on.
MV: What are some of the challenges you face?
Mallam Tabib: Some of the challenges we face are:
- Police disturbance: Policemen used to disturb us a lot as they thought we were one of the 419 or fetish herbal practitioners. I’ve been invited several times, but in the end, they always confirm that we don’t dupe people or engage in fetish practices. Today, as we speak, our drugs have been certified by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). This really shows we’re on the right track. AlhamduliLlah.
- Threats from Herbalists: We used to receive threats from herbalists and witches too. Matter-of-factly, they have come to me in daylight threatening to deal with me spiritually, because the people who they tied spiritually get freed when they get here, all with the power of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ. We chose to be unbothered by their threats, and here we are today, getting better.
- Financial challenges have also been a cog in the wheel of our practices, especially from the side of our patients. In most cases, many patients would have toiled around hospitals before getting to our hospital, which would have made them go broke financially. We offer help to some we’re capable of helping, but some struggle so hard to make up with the payments, while others leave because they couldn’t afford to pay. We hope the Islamic bodies/individuals reach out to some of these patients as they need financial help.
MV: What is your advice for upcoming Islamic healers?
Mallam Tabib: My first and candid advice is that they should learn about this profession thoroughly. Personally, I learnt the length and breadth of Islamic healing. From Islamic healers to Islamic scholars, and even to many Islamic books which have been written on this noble profession. Also, their intention should be to aid the cause of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ . Once that’s the foundation, everything else will fall into place.
They also need to be pious and free of sins. A method of treatment like Ruqyah (exorcism) can be successfully carried out only by a pious healer, lest the healer get attacked by Jinns.
Similarly, they should make an effort to have mentors who can direct or advise them if they get off track. They should also continue to learn too: from seminars to conferences and workshops where several lectures are delivered on this noble profession. Because, an improving knowledge is like a flowing river, while an unimproved one is like a stagnant river that will stink.
MV: Where do you see yourself in years to come?
Mallam Tabib: In Sha Allah, in years to come, we hope to have progressed far better than we are now. Currently, we have two hospitals, a factory, and a rehabilitation center (which is currently under construction). In years to come, we hope to have preached against the polytheistic form of treatments and propagated the pristine medication better than we are doing currently, while we hope Allah continue to be our helper.
Before I conclude, as I previously stated, we have many patients who travel here from across the country for treatments, but are unable to afford some of these treatments, as a result, we would like to appeal to Muslim bodies and individuals to help the cause of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ as some of these patients need financial help, and we’re not capable of helping many patients at a time.
