Afghanistan’s news agency claimed that a magnitude 6.1 earthquake there on Wednesday left at least 1,000 people dead and 1,500 others injured.

Early on Wednesday, a strong earthquake shook Afghanistan’s southeast, killing over 1,000 people and injuring over 1,500 more. Uncertainty surrounds the earthquake’s precise magnitude. The USGS recorded it at 5.9, while the EMSC recorded it at 6.1, according to Reuters.

The earthquake occurred approximately 27 miles from Khost, which is located approximately 95 miles south of Kabul, the nation’s capital. According to seismic maps, the shocks were felt as far away as northern Pakistan. Since two earthquakes in the Hindu Kush area of Afghanistan killed close to 1,000 people in 2002, this earthquake is the deadliest to hit the country.

The already severe humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan is almost certainly going to get worse as a result of Wednesday’s earthquake, which happened in a hilly area that is difficult to access without a helicopter.
