The Hajj is the world’s largest Muslim pilgrimage, held in Makkah, Saudi Arabia (KSA), once a year. Every year, between 2 and 3 million people visit to perform the time-bound rites. Pilgrims performing the Hajj in 2022 will be able to see the construction of the world’s longest walkway, which will connect the holy sites of Masjid Al Haram, Muzdalifa, Mina, and Arafat.
The project’s major goal is to provide pilgrims with comfort, security, and safety as they travel between the holy sites of Arafat, Muzdalifa, and Mina.
This road was built with four lanes and spans over 25 kilometers, making it one of the world’s longest pedestrian paths. The first road measures 5,100 meters in length, the second 7,580 meters, the third 7,556 meters, and the fourth 4,620 meters.
These paths also involved the installation of 500,000 square meters of interlocking tiles, 500 concrete barriers, and 1,000 pilgrim-resting seats. Umbrellas were placed to cover pilgrims from the sun’s rays, as well as spray columns to cool them off.
On both sides of the road, there are also 57 directional panels, over 400 high-tech lighting poles, 810 LED lanterns, 25 to 30 meter high lighting towers, and 100 watt lanterns, as well as over 400 waste bins.
These longest walkways also include a separate corridor for those with special needs, with the goal of making pilgrim rites easier to conduct and allowing them to move around the holy sites without difficulty or danger.
The conversion of valley bottoms into roadways has given the area a more civilized appearance and eliminated foul odors, flies, and mosquitoes.
