The Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit, has announced the winners of the inaugural Lagos Intellectual Quiz Competition (LIQC).
Unfortunately, education in Nigeria is plagued by a slew of issues. Nigeria is ranked 152nd out of 187 nations in the United Nations Human Development Index, behind Kenya, Ghana, Botswana, and Rwanda.
Nigeria’s educational system is beset by infrastructural degradation, negligence, resource waste, and deplorable working conditions. Over ten million youngsters are out of school in the country. That is the highest point on the planet. Another 27 million students are failing miserably in school. Hundreds of millions of Nigerians are illiterate, with around 60 million – or 30% — illiterate. Advocates in the education sector have urged the government at all levels to make quality education a priority. Investing in early childhood education yields the greatest return on investment per naira spent.
On Saturday, leaders and members of the MSSN’s Lagos State Area Unit attended the event’s big finale, which took place at the Multipurpose Hall of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos.
The Lagos Intellectual Quiz Competition Champions
Majisa Okunade of Ansar-Ud-Deen High School, Surulere, and Moosa Akintunde of MIMS Comprehensive College, Bajulaye, Somolu, emerged champions in the senior and junior categories, respectively, in a fiercely contested competition.
In the senior category, Muhammad Ajuwon of Agidingbi Senior Secondary School in Ikeja and Muhammad Isu of MIMS Comprehensive College in Bajulaye, Somolu secured first and second place, respectively.
Khawlah Bello of Excelsior Islamic Schools in Satellite Town, Amuwo Odofin (first runner-up) and Nimotallah Ibrahim of Odumola Junior Secondary School in Epe were the finalists in the junior category (second runner-up).
Prizes Totaling Over One Million Naira Awarded to Winners
Each of the winners (both categories) received N200,000. The first and second place runners-up each received N140,000, and the third and fourth place runners-up each received N100,000. There were also some consolation prizes.
Educational Standard in Nigeria
Mr Kamaldeen Abiona, the head of the LIQC Organising Committee, said the edition began with preliminary rounds held across the state’s local government units. Malam Miftahudeen Thanni, the Amir of the MSSN, Lagos State Area Unit, criticized the continued degradation in the quality of education in Nigeria in a his speech.
“Undoubtedly, quality education has eluded our great nation, Nigeria,” Thanni lamented.
He added that, “Quality and free education is almost made impossible or is now a tale of the past as various setbacks have been witnessed in the sector over the years. It is an eyesore that the quality of education has totally dropped.”
Meanwhile, the event’s chairman, Alhaji Saheed Amzat, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Zedcrest Capitals, emphasized the importance of good education in Nigeria.
