Get to know Robinhood Ferdinand Cariño Padilla, a Filipino actor, screenwriter, producer, director, and presently Senator of the Republic, born on November 23, 1969.
He is now the most popular Senator in Philippine history, having received more than 26 million votes in any senate election. Women held the previous record, which was:
Cynthia Villar – 25,283,727
Loren Legarda – 24,264,969
Grace Poe – 20,337,327
Sen. Padilla joins the ranks of the late Alauya Alonto, Salipada Pendatun, Domocao Alonto, Santanina Rasul, and Mamintal Tamano as the only Muslim Filipinos elected to the Senate since 1942.
In 1998, he converted to Islam and took the Islamic name Abdul Aziz, which means “Servant of the Almighty.”
It most exemplified him when he had to sell his own hammer truck in order to raise 10 million pesos, which he then donated to Marawi victims. His giving of a Muslim burial property at Nurzagaray, Bulacan, is another memorable moment he is fondly remembered for. That is just a small sample of his efforts to not only Muslims, but the entire Filipino nation. Amazing man, very selfless and giving without expecting anything in return.
In the Philippines, Islam was the first monotheistic religion recorded. Filipinos of various ethnolinguistic groups practice Islam, with over half of them living on the large southern island of Mindanao. According to the 2015 Census of Population, Islam is the second most popular religion in Mindanao, with 6,064,744 adherents, or 6.01 percent of the country’s total population (2015 POPCEN).
