H.R.H. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was born on July 31, 1961, to Muhammad Aminu Sanusi and Saudatu Anduwa Hussain, and comes from a heritage of royal blood and public service in both the spiritual and temporal realms.
His forefathers include a number of imams and judges. Sanusi’s father was a pioneer professional diplomat in Nigeria, holding the royal title of Chiroma of Kano. Muhammadu Sanusi is grandson is a member of the Dabo dynasty and a former emir of Kano, a historic city-state.
Sanusi is the classic rebel, and he has demonstrated this in practically every role he has held. He was the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and he was a critic of the government’s policies as well as a whistleblower, which lost him his job.
He ditched his suit and bow tie for a turban and royal regalia, rising to become one of the country’s most senior Islamic figures and the monarch of a staunchly conservative city. As Emir, he defied traditions and attempted to overthrow centuries-old practices.
Sanusi was a social activist and the face of the revolution. Mr Sanusi was dismissed by the Kano State government on March 9, 2020, and security officers took him to Abuja. According to the Kano State Government, Mr Sanusi was deposed due to insubordination.
The removal of the deposed Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, from Kano State was pronounced unlawful and unconstitutional by the Federal High Court in Abuja in 2021. The court, Anwuli Chikere, awarded him N10 million in damages as well as damages against the respondents, who included the police, the State Security Service (SSS), and the Kano State Attorney-General. She argued that the Kano State government’s use of the Emirate Council Law, 2019, to deport Mr Sanusi was in violation of the Nigerian constitution.
