Abduhelil Hashim, a Uyghur (Uighurs) Muslim instructor, was seized and detained in a Chinese detention camp in 2017. For sending his kid to study the Quran, he was eventually condemned to 19 years in prison. He died in May 2021 while imprisoned at the Kunes Maximum-Security Prison.
He may have died as a result of torture while in prison, according to his family.
Uyghurs are a largely Muslim ethnic group who speak a Turkic language and dwell primarily in what is now China’s Xinjiang province. According to Chinese government statistics, the Uyghur population in the Xinjiang region is just over 12 million people, accounting for over half of the total population.
Since deadly terror strikes some years ago, the ruling Communist Party has been accused of human rights violations as part of a large-scale crackdown against minority Muslim groups in the province.
For Uyghurs, using their native language can mean a death sentence. People’s Republic of China authorities are sentencing Uyghur Muslim educators who publish textbooks in their native language to life in prison and even death.
The Chinese government has denied accusations of “genocide” and abuse of the Uyghur and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang, saying its actions have been necessary to prevent violent extremism.
China has also attacked accusations of forced labor of Uyghurs in factories and cotton fields as well as sanctions imposed by the US on individual officials connected with persecution carried out in Xinjiang.
Rights groups have said that China detained over 1 million people in prison-like reeducation centers where they are told to denounce Islam and traditional culture, learn Mandarin Chinese and swear loyalty to the Communist Party and President Xi Jinping. Many Uyghur academics have been arrested on charges of separatism.
