The Supreme Court of India has intervened to prevent officials from removing illegal shops and barriers surrounding a mosque in New Delhi’s primarily Muslim district.
After authorities demolished shops in New Delhi, many Muslims protested the demolition of their shops and establishments in many Indian cities.
Government said they want to remove illegal stores in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, where clashes broke out between Muslims and Hindus over the weekend near a mosque and temple in which several people, including police officers, were injured.
Critique asserts that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party are attempting to scare India’s 200 million Muslims through the demolition campaigns.
According to Human Rights Watch, Indian authorities have passed laws and policies that systematically discriminate against Muslims and stigmatize government critics. Prejudices rooted in the current Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration have entered autonomous institutions like the police and judiciary, allowing nationalist groups to intimidate, harass, and attack religious minorities with impunity.
