Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, cautioned judges in the country on Wednesday to avoid undeserved wealth in order to avoid breaking the law and getting themselves into trouble.
Judges, according to Justice Muhammad, must avoid vain grandeur, dishonesty, and ostentatious lifestyles borne of corrupt acquaintances as judicial officers.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria issued the warning while installing six justices on the Federal High Court of Nigeria and one on the Federal Capital Territory High Court.
He stated that the National Judicial Council, or NJC, will never stop working to identify and remove bad apples from the judiciary.
According to Justice Muhammad, corrupt judges can only run, but they will not be able to hide from the NJC’s disciplinary apparatus.
“As I always say, appointment to the bench is not appointment to affluence, influence or unholy alliance with people of questionable character that may appear before you in different guises and make you do what is offensive to the law.”
The new judges are Emmanuel Gakko, Musa Sulaiman Liman,
Segun-Bello Mabel Taiye, Bala Khalifa-Mohammed Usman, Ahmad Gama Mahmud, Aminu Garba of the Federal High Court and Joseph Adebayo Aina of the FCT High Court.
