Zamzam water is a sacred water used for religious and therapeutic purposes by Muslims. Millions of pilgrims drink it and bring it home as gifts for family and friends.
The well is an Allah-created source of water that arose spontaneously thousands of years ago when Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) son Ismail (Ishmael) was left thirsty and sobbing in the desert with his mother Hajar (Hagar).
This is how Makkah’s dry and barren valley came to be populated. The Archangel Gabriel uncovered the water of Zamzam. Hagar, the patriarch Ibraaheem’s wife, stifled its flow and turned it into a well.
The Zamzam well stands 21 meters east of the Holy Kaaba, in the courtyard of the Al-Haram Mosque.

- The King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, the custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, issued instructions several years ago to establish the project in Kudai at his own expense in order to ensure the purity of Zamzam water using the most up-to-date world methods, as well as electronically packing and distributing it at a cost of SR 700 million.
- The Ministry of Water and Electricity completed King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz for Zamzam Water in the year 1434 (2013), with an initial capacity of five thousand cubic meters of water from Zamzam daily.
- The project manufactures 200 thousand plastic Zamzam water packs every day, each having a capacity of 10 liters. At the project’s headquarters, there are 42 distribution sites, ensuring that Zamzam water is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- One of the purposes of the King Abdullah for Zamzam Water Project (KPZW) was to allow filled Zamzam water bottles to be purchased in airports in Jeddah, Madinah, and Kudai in Makkah to aid Hajj and Umrah pilgrims save time.
- King Abdullah’s Zamzam watering project produces 200 thousand bottles per day.
- During Ramadan, The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque provided more than half a million gallons of Zamzam water to guests.
- It’s part of a larger initiative to supply Zamzam water to believers during Ramadan, which began on Saturday. Throughout the site, 100,000 Zamzam water bottles were handed out.
