CHECK THE FACTS: Door Of The Kaaba Was Opened But Nothing Was Seen Inside

A report made in a widely circulated video on social media claiming the Kaaba’s door was opened last Friday, but “nothing was seen inside,” and unseen persons were reciting prayers has been debunked.

The tape, recorded during Ramadan a few weeks ago, shows workers preparing the entrance to the Kaaba for a political delegation during Tahajjud (night) prayers, according to our source at Haramain. Users should not share the caption that is being distributed alongside the video since it is absolutely untrue.

The Kaaba

In pre-Islamic times, the Kaaba served as a sanctuary. Muslims believe that the Kaaba was built by Abraham (also known as Ibrahim in Islamic history) and his son, Ismail. According to legend, it was formerly a plain rectangular construction with no roof. In c. 608 C.E., the Quraysh tribe, which ruled Mecca, rebuilt the pre-Islamic Kaaba with alternating masonry and wood courses. To safeguard the shrine from intruders and flood waters, a door was constructed above ground level.

There are only three pillars supporting the roof and a few hung silver and gold lighting in the interior. During most of the year the Kaaba is covered with an enormous cloth of black brocade, the kiswah.
