Abeokuta (Refuge Among Rocks), town, capital of Ogun state, southwestern Nigeria. The town was founded about 1830 by Sodeke (Shodeke), a hunter and leader of the Egba refugees who fled from the disintegrating Oyo empire.

The Great Mosque of Abeokuta was built in 1925 on the site of the very first Mosque erected in the 1830s, on a piece of land donated by Oba Sodeke shortly after the Egbas had settled there. The Mosque is a landmark nature can be seen from the Olumo Rock (Under the rock), one of the historic tourist centres in Ogun State of Nigeria. Olumo Rock was used as a fortress by the Egba people in the early 19th century.

In the 1840s, Christian missionaries and Sierra Leone Creoles who later became prominent as missionaries and as businessmen settled in the town. The Mosque is one of Afro-Brazilian Mosques in West Africa designed by African returnees from Brazil. The design is based on the architecture of the Baroque Colonial Churches in Brazil.

The impressive work of architecture variant names are Abeokuta Central Mosque and Ikija Central Mosque. The ancient structure is located in one of the interior areas of Abeokuta, close to Itoku Market. The walk from the Centenary Hall to the Abeokuta Central Mosque takes about 27 minutes (13km).
