Icon of Knowledge, Professor Abdul Kareem Hussain Akande is Dead

The late Professor Abdul Kareem Hussain Akande is one of the founding fathers of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) and former National President. He was a Professor emeritus of Medical Biochemistry. Born in 1939 at Badagry, Lagos State, Professor Abdulkareem is also a renowned scholar in Islamic knowledge.

The Muslim Voice learnt that, the great caller (da’i) to Islam in Nigeria, Prof. Hussein died early this morning [22nd Jumadal-Awwal, 1443A.H (26th December, 2021)]. He was later buried in Badagry, Lagos State today in accordance with Islamic rites.

Before his death, he was one of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) members. The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) is the apex Islamic authority in Nigeria.

During his lifetime, Prof. Hussein won many International Awards both in the United States and the United Kingdom. The International Biography Centre Cambridge, England, nominated him as “The International Man Of The Millennium” in 1999.

The Vice Chancellor, Fountain University, Prof. Amidu O. Sanni in a statement issued by the University’s Information Officer, Taoheed Alimi, described his death as a sad loss to the Muslim community, Prof. Sanni recalled the remarkable effort of the deceased both in academic and Islamic work.

“He initiated in 2004, the Forum of Muslim Professors in Lagos to serve as a Think Tank to assist Muslims in power and academics and his house at Gbagada was a rendezvous of all intellectuals. Through his inspiring leadership and commitment to human capital development, many young Muslims got scholarships to train in the Arab world, especially in Sudan through the ISLAMIC STUDY GROUP OF NIGERIA which he led for decades”, he said.

In his condolence message, the Amir (President) of MSSNLagos, Mallam Miftahudeen Thanni, described Prof. Abdulkareem’s demise as a big loss to the entire Muslim community and youths. Mallam Thanni said, “The impact, contribution, and solid foundation laid by the late Prof Hussein Abdulkareem remain the pillars that sustain society to date.

“He will be greatly missed as a father, mentor, and selfless leader of MSSN family because of his contribution to both society and academic field. He is a credible mentor and fatherly figure worthy of emulation. We commiserate with our MSSN National body ably led by Mallam Shehu Abubakar, on Professor’s demise,” he added.

In 2016, Dr. Majolagbe Abdrafiu described him in an article as one of those boys, one of the founding fathers of that great society (Muslim Students Society of Nigeria). While praising their impacts in propagation and sacrifice towards Islam in Nigeria, he said:

They are free borns not second class humans in their fatherland.

They know they are entitled to anything and everything that bring advancement to man and the community.

They are Muslims and they believed Islam is the only way to Paradise.

They believe that much at their parents thought them.

However they were denied education a key to good life and development. White men and their black Christian stooges told them you can’t western education with your islam. Do away with your Islam and the islamics then get western education.

They were persecuted and rebranded with new identity. Those boys and girls resisted they fought in their own little way.

They came together from their various missionaries secondary schools having realised the strength in unity and direction of purpose.

May Allah shower his mercy upon the soul of our father in Da’wah, Prof Hussein Abdulkarim. Aameen.
