A drone laden with explosives struck the building, injuring six of his bodyguards in an apparent assassination attempt, officials said.
Earlier on Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi escaped an assassination attempt on him in Baghdad after an explosive-laden drone targeted his residence.
In a video posted on his official Twitter page, al-Kadhimi confirmed that he and other workers at his residence are safe, stressing that “cowardly missiles and cowardly drones do not build a homeland or a future (for the country), and we are working to build our homeland by respecting the state and its institutions and creating a better future for all Iraqis.”
“I call on all parties to resort to calm dialogue to build Iraq and its future,” al-Kadhimi said in his speech, which was also aired by the official Iraqiya channel.
According to Ministry of Interior Spokesman General Saad Maan speaking to the Al-Iraqiya news network said, three drones were involved in the assassination attempt and security forces were able to down two of the drones.
Iran’s top security official, Ali Shamkhani, condemned on Sunday, calling it “a new sedition.”
“The attempt … is a new sedition that must be traced back to foreign think-tanks,” he said on Twitter, without giving further details.
The Iraqi military said in a statement the attack targeted Kadhimi’s residence and that he was in “good health”.
Two government officials said Kadhimi’s residence had been hit by at least one explosion.
Turkey condemn the attack
A statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry reads, “we hope that the perpetrators of this cowardly terror attack, which clearly aims to undermine the sovereignty and stability of Iraq, would be identified and held accountable before the law as soon as possible.”
The statement added that, Turkey will continue to stand in solidarity with the Iraqi people and state in their fight against terrorism, irrespective of its origin.
