JAMB Registrar, Oloyede Advocate for Emergency, Enhance Financing in Educational Sector

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede, yesterday, called on the government to declare emergency in the education sector and increase its funding.

Prof. Oloyede spoke on Thursday, as the guest speaker at the 2021 Faculty of Arts of the Lagos State University (LASU) annual lecture, titled: Normalising the Abnormal: JAMB Operations During the COVID-19 Era. During his speech, he also called for increased budgetary allocations to the sector that would be comparable to other African countries with lower Gross Domestic Product (GDP) than Nigeria’s but that have prioritised education.

The JAMB Boss said, “My recommendations are, all government agencies and parastatals should join the war against corruption so that it will not be a war being waged by only a few individuals and parastatals in our nation.

“They should declare a state of emergency on education with a view to addressing all the challenges facing the sector comprehensively; increase budgetary allocation to education to that level that it will be comparable with, at least, African countries with lower GDP than ours, but have nonetheless given education the priority it deserves; and returning excellence and competence as the main criteria for recruitment of staff, not clannish or ethnic patronage.”

He argued that though the pandemic had profound negative impacts on daily existence, it was most traumatic in the education sector.

“It then becomes urgent and important that as a nation, we must begin to confront the deficits in the system in a way that will mitigate the impacts of the pandemic on the future of our nation as a whole and the education sector in particular,” he stated.

In addition, Prof. Oloyede also called on stakeholders in the education sector to strive towards establishing pedigree of integrity by sticking to honesty, probity, and transparency in examination processes.
