81-Year-Old Egyptian Scholar Hanged

During the month of Ramadan last year, Egyptian authorities executed Sheikh Abdul Rahim Jibril, also known as the Sheikh of the Quran.

Nine men were executed, including Sheikh Abdul Rahim.

These death sentences were handed down after a shabbily conducted trial in which the defendants were accused of storming the Kerdasa police station.

The hangings took place in the Wadi Natrun prison complex in the Beheira district of the Nile Delta.

Nine Egyptian human rights organizations condemned the conviction, citing serious abuses of fair trial rights such as detainees being refused access to their counsel throughout arrest, interrogation, and forced confession.
